Submitting a website to search engines is probably one of the most important parts of the SEO process. Without doing so you will never be found. Your website will remain lost in cyberspace. Luckily its very straightforward and doesnt take a long time. All you have to do is to submit to 4 of the main search engines as they feed the rest of the smaller search engines. This chart shows the relationship between the bigger search engines . This chart has a relationship chart between most of the rest and shows DMOZ part in the process . As for the websites that offer to submit your site to 100 search engines or more without having to pay a penny the jury is still out. I usually submit to the 4 listed below and one of the maximizers just to be sure. Here is links to where to submit your site and a little bit about them.

    Submit your site to Google.com

Google is the biggest search engine on the planet it accounts for the majority of internet searches and also supplies some of the smaller engines such as AOL and Netscape. Submitting to Google is obligatory. It requires that you put some information about your site underneath so of course write some keywords. It takes less than 1 minute to do, so if you havent done it yet, get to it.

    Submit your site to Yahoo.com

Submitting to yahoo takes a small bit more effort; you have to set up a yahoo email account which can take a few minutes. Once you have that done you simply click through to the submit your page section and write in the URL and click submit, if you have more than one site rinse and repeat. Yahoo supplies to alltheweb, lycos and altavista.

    Submit your site to Bing.com

Bing and MSN are now one and the same so you simply have to go to the submit your site section on the bing website. Add your URL and sit back and wait. Bing according to the relationship chart is a stand alone search engine, it isnt supplied by anyone or doesnt supply to anyone, Im sure this will change in the future.

    Submit your site to DMOZ.ORG

Submitting your site to DMOZ is vital as they supply search engine results to pretty much everyone on the internet, this chart shows DMOZ relationship with search engines. DMOZ is an internet directory rather than a search engine, they have a team of volunteers who review sites before letting them be published, they are therefore the quality control of the internet. If you get a high ranking with them you are certainly on the right path.

Please take note that it can take a long time before your website appears on the search engine. There can be a number of reasons for this. Sometimes its just a backlog, sometimes you can be caught in the dreaded Google sandbox and sometimes it may be just caught up internal mysteries of the search engine world. DMOZ is particularly slow. I submitted a site to them 3 months ago and its still doesnt show up.
